Ginger-Basil Watermelon Mock-a-ritas

You know summer is here when the margaritas come flowing out. Two of my favorite things about summer are margaritas and watermelons… and margaritas. However, my health problems make it very difficult for me to enjoy the booze without getting ill. This is why I wanted to make these as mocktails. That way you can enjoy these with friends without it being just juice.

Last year, I had thoroughly enjoyed making purple basil mojitos mocktails and, admittedly, had gotten a little addicted to them, so I thought watermelon and basil could also potentially be a great combo. Oh gosh, oh mighty! Something about basil and sweet flavors that just fit together. What a nice way to enjoy a margarita without necessarily having alcohol. The flavor is complex enough to be able to enjoy without the booziness and doesn’t feel like you’re just drinking a fruit slushie.

The ginger and basil balance out the sweetness of the watermelon. Ginger gives it a nice bite, and the basil balances out the sweetness. A great mocktail for having a small gathering, and if you like, you can always add a little tequila and maybe a little orange liqueur (like a Cointreau). I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

Ginger-Basil Watermelon Mock-a-ritas

  • Blender
  • Margarita Glasses


  • 5 cup Watermelon, cubed
  • 1/3 cup Lime juice, plus 4 sliced lime rounds for garnish
  • 3 cups Ice
  • 2 tbsp Basil
  • 1/2 in Ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup Sugar for the rim
  • 4 Watermelon wedges, for garnish


  • Start by pouring the sugar in a small plate and use one of the lime wedges for wetting the rims of the glasses. Once the glasses are well moistened, dip your glass into the sugar.
  • In a blender, combine the watermelon with the lime juice, basil, ginger and ice, and blend until smooth.
  • Garnish with watermelon wedges basil leaves. Cheers!
